Smart Chickens

Yesterday was moving day! But first, a quick update on the last few weeks. Batch #1 of chicks is currently two weeks old. Batch #2 arrived on Thursday. So for 4 days we had 200 chicks in our garage. Here's what things looked like:

It's like one of those Highlights hidden pictures!! Can you find the remnants of previous money-earning projects?

You might notice the chicken wire around the kiddie pools. We didn't have to do that last spring. This batch of chickens is apparently much smarter. Last spring we had a few that figured out how to hop out of the pool, but with this bunch we've had dozens find their way to the wide spacious world known as "The Rest of the Garage." We even had 3 brave pioneers who located a small crack to force their way into a much wider, brighter world outside. But we rounded them up and yesterday, 100 chicks made the transition to become grass-fed chickens.

But first, check out the size difference between the 2 day old chicks and the 2 week old chicks:

Awkward ugly teenager, meet adorable newborn

Back to our much smarter chickens. As soon as we transferred them outside,

they took to foraging right away, digging around in the grass for tender shoots and scrumptious bugs. What smart little birds! And that means more antioxidants and Omega3 fats for you the customers come eating time!

And that makes Zelie happy:

I know: totally unnecessary picture. But look at her. How could I not include it? :)

  2. I had no idea adolescent chickens were so gawky looking. It's pretty amazing how quickly they change. Makes me excited for their short journey to my dinner table :)

Oh, and I've already located the previous money making endeavor on facebook, so I'll let someone else find it here.
